What: Medical Laboratory Technology also called Clinical laboratory science is an allied health profession which is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease through the use of clinical laboratory tests. These tests help doctors to detect, diagnose and treat diseases.

Clinical laboratory technicians perform routine tasks in the laboratory. For example, they collect samples of blood and urine, label them, and conduct simple tests on them. They sterilize instruments; prepare, stain, and label slides; and keep records of tests. Clinical laboratory technicians also perform tests involved in blood banking. For example, they may help to determine a donor’s blood type. They may work in several areas of the clinical laboratory or specialize in just one. Histo-technicians prepare slides of body tissue for examination by clinical laboratory technologists and pathologists. They freeze tissue so that it can be cut into paper-thin slices. They also stain the slides so that the tissue can be seen clearly under a microscope.

The starting salary package of a medical lab technology/ technician ranges from Rs 6, 500 – Rs 10,000 per month in hospitals and in clinics. The pay packages increases with years of experience.

How: Someone who wants to become a Clinical laboratory technologist should have the ability to conduct research, finish tasks with speed as well as with accuracy, to handle stress, make analytical judgment, interpreting technical/scientific data, knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, mechanical ability and the ability to use computers. Also have an eye for detail, be self-sufficient, precise, dedicated and self-motivated.

Aspirants of medical laboratory technology can take up courses both at diploma and undergraduate level. The B.Sc. programme in medical laboratory technology is offered by different medical colleges/institutions across the country. The degree awarded is B.Sc.-M.L.T (BLMT). The basic eligibility criterion for Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) is 10+2 or equivalent with Science subjects. BMLT is a 3 year programme.

Eligibility needed for diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) is 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized University or Board. Duration of the course is 2 years. There are also other certificate courses in lab technicians which needs 10+2 as the eligibility. Courses are offered by colleges, universities as well as hospitals. The hospitals are usually affiliated with a college or university.

Where: One can also apply directly to hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and research institutions at which you would like to work. Additional training is usually required to advance. Clinical laboratory technicians may study to become technologists. A master’s degree is generally required for teaching and research positions. The outlook for clinical laboratory technicians is excellent through the year 2014, with employment expected to increase faster than average. As the older population grows, so will the volume of testing and the number of clinical laboratories.

हॉस्पिटल या क्लीनिक में शुरुआती तौर पर मेडिकल लैब टेक्नालॉजीध्टेक्निशियन का वेतन प्रतिमाह 6,500 रुपये से – 10,000 रुपये के बीच हो सकता है। अनुभव में होने वाली वृद्धि के साथ वेतन के पैकेज में भी इजाफा होता है।

मेडिकल लैबोरेट्री टेक्नालॉजी में करियर बनाने के इच्छुक अभ्यर्थी डिप्लोमा या अंडरग्रेजुएट लेवल के कोर्स के विकल्प को चुन सकते हैं। देश के विभिन्न कॉलेज/इंस्टिट्यूशन द्वारा मेडिकल लैबोरेट्री टेक्नालॉजी में बीएससी प्रोग्राम की पेशकश भी की जाती है। अवॉर्ड की गई डिग्री का नाम बी.एससी-एम.एल.टी(बीएमएलटी) है। बैचलर ऑफ मेडिकल लैबोरेट्री टेक्नालॉजी(बीएमएलटी) के लिए बुनियादी पात्रता मानदंड विज्ञान विषयों के साथ 10$2 या समकक्ष है। बीएमएलटी कोर्स की अवधि तीन साल की होती है।

डिप्लोमा इन मेडिकल लैबोरेट्री टेक्नालॉजी (डीएमएलटी) के लिए आवश्यक योग्यता है किसी मान्यता प्राप्त विश्वविद्यालय या बोर्ड से 10$2 या समकक्ष परीक्षा है। इस कोर्स की अवधि 2 साल की होती है। इसके अलावा लैब टेक्निशियंस में कई सर्टिफिकेट कोर्स भी उपलब्ध हैं जिसके लिए 10$2 पास होना आवश्यक है। कोर्सेज की पेशकश कॉलेज व यूनिवर्सिटीज के अलावा हॉस्पिटल्स द्वारा भी की जाती है। हॉस्पिटल्स आम तौर पर किसी कॉलेज या विश्वविद्यालय से संबद्ध होते हैं।

कहांः कोई चाहे तो सीधे उन हॉस्पिटल्स, क्लीनिक, लैबोरेट्री और रिसर्च इंस्टिट्यूशंस में अप्लाई कर सकता है जहां वह काम करना चाहता है। इस क्षेत्र में आगे बढ़ने के लिए आमतौर पर अतिरिक्त प्रशिक्षण की आवश्यक पड़ती है। क्लीनिकल लैबोरेट्री टेक्निशियंस यदि चाहे तो टेक्नोलॉजिस्ट्स बनने के लिए अपनी पढ़ाई को जारी रख सकते हैं। टीचिंग व रिसर्च इत्यादि के लिए आम तौर पर मास्टर्स डिग्री की आवश्यकता होती है। वर्ष 2014 में क्लीनिकल लैबोरेट्री टेक्निशियंस का आउटलुक बेहद शानदार रहा है और आगे भी इस क्षेत्र में रोजगार के बेहतरीन अवसर मौजूद हैं। देश की बुजुर्ग आबादी के उम्र में इजाफे के अनुसार ही परीक्षण की मात्रा और क्लीनिकल लैबोरेट्रीज की संख्या में भी वृद्धि होती है।
