What: Instructional design involves the application of learning and instructional theory to ensure quality in education. It is a systematic process of translating general principles of learning and instruction into realistic plans for creation of instructional materials and learning results. There are many other definitions for Instructional Design.

The global need for customised e-learning packages has opened up a host of exciting new career opportunities for instructional designers. With instructional designing (ID) services being farmed out from UK and US, instructional designing is emerging as one of the fastest growing fields in India. Instructional designers draft the blueprint for a whole multimedia project — from determining the educational design and content of the project to deciding how to present it.

Salaries in India range from Rs25, 000 to Rs135, 000 per month for the junior and the senior most.

How: As an instructional designer, you will work closely with subject matter experts to organise information in such a way that a learner can easily comprehend it. Be prepared for extensive brain storming sessions on pre-design activities such as content design, analysis of context, content and learner needs. While teaching and training skills are desirable attributes, it goes without saying that you need excellent communication skills in English with a good understanding of web-based training.

As a trainee instructional designer, your main responsibility will be to implement design specifications. You can also work as an integrator, animation, graphic artist or visualizer. Today, the need for instructional designers is being felt in corporate training institutes, in the public sector as well as in educational institute’s .Earlier, the role of an instructional designer was restricted to designing curricula for instructional books or manuals. Now instructional designers are much more tech savvy and offer consultation in fields ranging from educational TV, computer-based teaching, instructional video, business training and multimedia to print media and classroom design.

Where: For good instructional designers, the future is very promising. The field of Instructional Design is emerging in India. Most jobs in India are currently in large IT or KPO organizations. भारत में इस सेक्टर में जूनियर और सीनियर लेवल पर वेतन 25,000 रुपये से 1,35,000 रुपये प्रतिमाह के बीच होता है।

कैसे: बतौर इंस्ट्रक्शनल डिजाइनर आपको उस विषय के विशेषज्ञ के साथ मिलकर जानाकारियों को व्यवस्थित तरीके से पेश करने पर बारीकी से काम करना होगा जिससे की उसे कोई नौसिखिया भी आसानी से समझ सके। कंटेंट डिजाइन और शिक्षार्थी की आवश्यकताओं के विश्लेषण जैसी प्री-डिजाइन एक्टिविटिज के लिए व्यापक मंथन वाले सत्र हेतु तैयार रहना होगा। टिचिंग और ट्रेनिंग इंस्ट्रक्शनल डिजाइनर बनने के लिए आवश्यक है। इसके अलावा इंस्ट्रक्शनल डिजाइनर बनने के लिए आपके अंदर अंग्रेजी में बात करने की उत्कृष्ट शैली और वेब आधारित ट्रेनिंग की अच्छी समझ भी होनी चाहिए।

बतौर ट्रेनी इंस्ट्रक्शनल डिजाइनर आपकी मुख्य जिम्मेदारी डिजाइन विनिर्देशों को अप्लाई करने की होगी। आप इंटिग्रेटर, एनिमेशन, ग्राफिक आर्टिस्ट और विजुअलाइज़र के तौर पर भी काम कर सकते हैं। आज इंस्ट्रक्शनल डिजाइनर्स की जरुरत कॉर्पोरेट ट्रेनिंग इंस्टिट्यूट्स, और पब्लिक सेक्टर्स के साथ शैक्षिक संस्थानों में भी महसूस की जा रही है। पहले इंस्ट्रक्शनल डिजाइनर्स  की भूमिका इंस्ट्रक्शनल बुक्स या मैनुअल के लिए पाठ्यक्रम की डिजाइनिंग तक सीमित थी। अब इंस्ट्रक्शनल डिजाइनर्स कही ज्यादा टेक सेवी हो गए हैं और अब वे एजुकेशनल टीवी, कंप्यूटर आधारित टिचिंग इंस्ट्रक्शनल वीडियो, बिजनेस ट्रेनिंग और मल्टीमीडिया से लेकर प्रिंट मीडिया और क्लासरुम डिजाइनिंग तक में अपनी सेवाएं दे रहें है।

कहां: अच्छे इंस्ट्रक्शनल डिजाइनर्स के लिए भविष्य असीम संभावनाओ से भरा हुआ है। इंस्ट्रक्शनल डिजाइन का फिल्ड भारत में तेजी से उभर रहा है। फिलहाल भारत में सबसे ज्यादा नौकरियां बड़े आईटी या केपीओ ऑर्गेनाइजेशन्स में है। विप्रो टेक्नोलॉजीज, सिफी, एनआईआईटी, टाटा इंटरएक्टिव सिस्टम, लॉयनब्रिज, एप्टेक, एलिमेंटके, मेंटोवेयर, आईबीएम, एक्सेंचर, कॉनवर्जेस, आदित्य बिड़ला ग्रुप, रिलायंस इंडस्ट्रीज आदि भारत की प्रमुख नियोक्ता कंपनियों में शामिल हैं
