What: Industrial designers develop the concepts for manufactured products, such as cars, home appliances, and toys. They combine art, business, and engineering to make products that people use every day. Industrial designers focus on the user experience in creating style and function for a particular gadget or appliance.

Industrial designers typically do the following:

  • Research who will use the product and the various ways it might be used
  • Sketch out ideas or create blueprints
  • Use computer software to develop virtual models of different designs
  • Examine materials and production costs to determine manufacturing requirements
  • Work with other specialists to evaluate whether their design concepts will fill the need at a reasonable cost
  • Evaluate product safety, appearance, and function to determine if a design is practical

Earnings depend on the industrial designer’s experience and ability and on the type of job. The relevant salary for industrial designers was 20,000 in 2012.

How: Industrial designers generally focus on a particular product category. For example, some design medical equipment, while others work on consumer electronics products, such as computers or smart phones. Other designers develop ideas for new bicycles, furniture, housewares, or snowboards.

They imagine how consumers might use a product and test different designs with consumers to see how each design looks and works. Industrial designers often work with engineers, production experts, and marketing specialists to find out if their designs are feasible and to apply their colleagues’ professional expertise to their designs. For example, industrial designers may work with marketing specialists to develop plans to market new product designs to consumers.

Computers are a major tool for industrial designers. They use computer-aided design software (CAD) to sketch ideas because computers make it easy to make changes and show alternatives. If they work for manufacturers, they may also use computer-aided industrial design software (CAID) to create specific machine-readable instructions that tell other machines exactly how to build the product. Updated knowledge on the changing trends of industry and application of the same in design are often expected from candidates who are involved in this type of business.

Where: The candidates who have completed their graduation in any of the areas of industrial design or mechanical or Civil Engineering are eligible to apply for the post. At the entry level, they can apply to junior level positions in industrial firms. By gaining experience in entry-level post, they can move in to the position of Industrial designer.

The bachelor’s degree in Industrial design/Mechanical/Civil engineering is the necessary qualification required for the post of Industrial designer. Bachelor of architecture degree holders is also eligible for the position of the same. After completion of the course, the candidate has to go through certain competitive test in order to get in to the post of industrial designer.

कहां: वो उम्मीदवार जिन्होने इंडस्ट्रियल डिजाइन, मैकेनिकल या सिविल इंजीनियरिंग में ग्रेजुएशन किया हो वह इस पद के लिए आवेदन हेतु पात्र है। एंट्री लेवल पर वे औद्योगिक फर्मों में जूनियर पदों के लिए आवेदन कर सकते हैं। एंट्री लेवल पर मिले अनुभव के बाद वे इंडस्ट्रियल डिजाइनर के पद पर पहुंच सकते हैं।

इंडस्ट्रियल डिजाइनर के पद के लिए इंडस्ट्रियल डिजाइन / मैकेनिकल / सिविल इंजीनियरिंग में ग्रेजुएशन की डिग्री होना जरुरी है। बैचलर ऑप आर्किटेक्चर की डिग्री धारक भी इस पद के लिए पात्र हैं। कोर्स पूरा होने के बाद उम्मीदवार को इंडस्ट्रियल डिजाइनर बनने के लिए कुछ प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं को पास करना पड़ता है।
